From Carnegie Hall To Beckwourth Riverfront Park, Sourdough Slim Yodels His Way Into Your Heart

Some come for the gold. Others come for a chance to throw a tomahawk with a mountain man. But when push comes to shove, almost everyone comes to see Sourdough Slim.

Easily the most popular performer each year at Beckwourth Frontier Days, the rubber-faced minstrel Sourdough Slim has been delighting audiences with his B-western persona since 1988.

A gifted yodeler, musician and comedian, Rick Crowder has performed as Sourdough Slim at Carnegie Hall in New York and Canada's Cowboy Festival in Calgary.

When he splays his guitar and yodels a cowboy story, he spreads the contagious feel-good spirit of the American West throughout the crowd.

Critics have even said that Sourdough Slim makes accordion playing "hip."

Crowder, of Paradise, spent much of his childhood on a family ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills. But he found his true calling on the stage.

Influenced by the likes of Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, W.C. Fields and Will Rogers, Sourdough's yodeling, dancing and rope tricks delight audiences of all ages.

His appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1994 was the first such appearance by a western performer in many, many years. To the amazement of Carnegie Hall's music advisor, Sourdough Slim entertained, charmed and educated the New York audience.

Beckwourth Frontier Days is proud to see the return of Sourdough Slim to the 1999 festival. He will be performing on both Saturday and Sunday.
